Drone from Russian Airspace Strikes Estonian Power Plant
The Internal Security Service stated that the incident occurred at the Auvere Power Station in Ida-Viru County at 3:43 a.m. local time. Officials confirmed that no injuries were reported.
A spokesperson cited by media said, "On the night of March 25 at 3:43 a.m. (0143 GMT), a drone hit the chimney of the Auvere power plant. No one was injured in the accident."
State Prosecutor General Astrid Asi indicated that, based on current information, there is no evidence suggesting the drone was deliberately directed at Estonia or the facility. She noted that preliminary investigative steps are underway and that further details will be clarified as the inquiry progresses. “According to current information, the drone was not directed at Estonia. Initial actions are currently being taken; the investigation will clarify the more specific circumstances,” she said.
In response to the incident, Justice Minister Liisa-Ly Pakosta said the government plans to convene an emergency meeting to assess the situation and potential implications for national security.
The event comes amid heightened regional sensitivity following a separate incident in neighboring Latvia, where another drone reportedly crossed into its airspace overnight and detonated in the Kraslava region.
Latvian authorities suggested the object may have deviated from its path or been affected by electronic countermeasures. Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina described the Estonian incident as comparable to earlier drone-related events.
Officials in Estonia have advised the public to avoid any debris from drones due to possible hazards while investigations continue.
